Solstice International L.L.C.About Us

Solstice commenced operating in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in early 1993, dealing solely in solar and wind power equipment. It currently operates from a showroom on Sheikh Zayed Highway (Dubai/Abu Dhabi main road), near the Dubai World Trade and Exhibition Complex, opposite Emirates' Towers ( the tallest building in the Middle East & Europe) and adjoining the Holiday  Crowne Plaza. In the showroom we display a wide range of renewable energy equipment and accessories ranging from educational kits to the largest commercial solar photovoltaic modules.

Equipment on display includes:
  • PV modules from Solarex, BP & Uni-Solar
  • Solar Water-Pumping Systems from Divwatt & ShurFlo
  • PV Charge controllers from Morningstar Corporation
  • Wind Turbines from Marlec Engineering & SouthWest Windpower
  • DC Lights from Steca & Kaynes Energy
  • ACDelco Batteries.
  • Various PV accessories, consumer products, educational items & books
  • Combined Inverters Charge Controllers from Steca.

The local market is small and re-exports particularly of domestic lighting systems to Afghanistan, African, Asian & CIS countries currently accounts for the bulk of our business. Re-exports have also included systems for water pumping, computing, telecommunications and refrigeration.

Locally "Solstice" has supplied systems for the Arab world's first solar powered vehicles and boats, 44 remote telemetry units at well-heads at a gas field in the UAE : systems to monitor water flow for Dubai Electricity & Water Authority : a navigation beacon for a pier adjoining Jebel Ali Port and Free Zone : designed, assembled and installed 45 traffic warning lights at schools and hazards for Dubai Municipality : hazard warning systems for Dubai Ports Authority, the Ruler’s Office and installed a number of solar powered horse crossings for the "Dubai World Cup", the worlds richest horse race.

The company was founded by Dr. Alan Dickson who holds a Ph.D. in science from the U.K. and who has been resident in the United Arab Emirates for 21 years. Alan was on the committee of the Dubai Natural History Group, Dubai's first environmental group since its formation in 1987, including 5 years as chairman and 2 as vice chairman. He has given lectures and demonstrations of Alternative Energy to various groups throughout the UAE including schools, the Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain & Ras al Khaima Colleges of Technology, the Environmental Groups of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and the British Business Group. He has also written many articles on the subject for local media including the "Earth Matters" series in the UAE "Connector" Magazine.

Stonehenge
Stonehenge - constructed around 1500BC, it is believed to have been used to predict the approach of solstice.  :-)

The name came from the fact that there were already four companies registered in Dubai with the first name "SOLAR", none with any involvement in solar power! and we could not incorporate it into our name. "SOLSTICE" started with the same first three letters and would appear alongside "SOLAR" in any directory. Also "SOLSTICE" means "Change" and this was a change for the owner into a field he really believed in. The "INTERNATIONAL" was the idea of Stuart Dickson a 15 year old at the time and currently the company's "Webmaster" who suggested the name as the initials "Si" are the chemical symbol for the element Silicon, from which most photovoltaic devices are made.
